Start with one research question

NotebookLM becomes more useful when the source set has a purpose. Write the question you are trying to answer before opening a collection of tabs. A narrow question gives you a test for every source: does it help answer the question, establish context, or challenge an assumption?

1. Find primary sources first

Begin with the sources closest to the underlying fact: an original report, paper, filing, transcript, documentation page, or first-party announcement. Secondary explanations are useful for discovery, but they should not quietly become the only evidence in the notebook.

Keep a short note about why each source matters. This makes later review faster and prevents a research workflow from becoming a list of links with no reasoning trail.

2. Separate discovery from preservation

Not every open tab belongs in the final source set. Use the discovery pass to gather candidates, then preserve only the sources that have useful evidence or context. Capturing everything creates noise and makes it harder to see which claims have support.

3. Keep source context visible

Copying a paragraph can be quick, but it can also lose the page title, URL, surrounding explanation, and path back to the original source. Preserve enough context to inspect the claim later. A selected passage should still point to its page; a conversation should retain its order and roles when the page supports it.

This does not make a source true. It makes the source easier to check.

4. Clean repeated captures

Before import, look for the same source captured more than once. Tracking parameters can make one page look like several URLs, while syndicated content can make different pages look similar. Review the evidence rather than deleting every match automatically.

5. Organize by research purpose

Group sources by the question they support, not only by the order in which you found them. A collection can contain primary evidence, background context, counterexamples, and sources that still need review. Notes should explain the next action, such as “check the date,” “compare with the filing,” or “use only for terminology.”

6. Connect to NotebookLM deliberately

When the source set is ready, open a signed-in NotebookLM tab and import the selected sources. Keep the NotebookLM page open and review the visible result. Mervadon does not bypass authentication or claim success when the remote state cannot be confirmed.

7. Check the artifact before downloading

An AI-generated artifact is an output to review, not a substitute for the source trail. Check that it is ready, inspect its citations or evidence where available, and download only after the result is verified. Keep the source set and the final artifact connected in your notes.

  1. Define a question.
